The crime rate is not too bad in China and Guangzhou is generally a pretty safe city. However, it is a big city with a population of more than 10 million. You shall not rule out any concerns of danger. When I say danger, I mean more of getting tricked, misdirected and ripped off in terms of money rather than having a gun or knife put on your back. Even though violent crimes of such do happen in Guangzhou and China, but it is very rare. However be alert at night and not to walk alone on a quiet street. For ladies it's suggested to take a taxi directly to your home at night.
Another advice is to watch your belongings and valuables especially in public areas. You’ve got to be constantly vigilant wherever you are, especially in crowded public areas, whether it's at the supermarket, at the bathroom of a restaurant, or at Metro Station and on street, you should always be aware of petty theft and guard your valuables, keep your bags zipped and wallets out of hip pockets.
A simple solution is to avoid carrying important documents, passport and IDs of any kind with you to crowded area if you don’t have to. If you do sometimes, carry the bag with your valuables under your arm or in the front, never carry your bag on the back!
The road in China might appear deadly to you at your first sight. The mix of cars, bikes, 3-wheel bikes sometimes and pedestrian make the situation complicated sometimes. The suggestion is that you can’t stop what other people like to do. But be careful yourself and use common sense. |
